November 13th

First Grade-

In the  sanctuary we thank god for giving us a mind to think who opens our eyes to the world and for many other things as we do every week. He allows us to be a Jewish family and for Israel to be strong.

The rabbi talks to us and says the Tiflis is one of the most important parts of the service where we believe that when we are all praying together, God is really listening.
It's a reminder to us and to God that wears the children/ the same people as he promised and protected years ago

We talk about what we do to spend the week, Shabbat, and what we do to start the new week, havdalah. We use wine, a special braided candle and we  smell the spices to have a good week.

We play a game that involves the different things we use for Shabbat and havdalah where one person goes outside and everyone inside chooses to hide one of the objects in a bag. When the student comes back into the room, they have to decide which object is missing.

 

In art class today, we were able to combine cinnamon with some clay to make our own spice boxes to take home with us

November 6th 2016- Continuing Your Child's Jewish Journey

Today was a very busy day for our sixth grade families!

Our sixth graders met with their parents and the rest of the clergy to discuss the process of becoming a B'nai Mitzvah. The morning began with a breakfast so that we could all get to know each other.
And then we discussed why we pray and what being Jewish means to us.  We did an activity where we made "stew" out of different things, like why and when we pray, how we like to interact with G-d and our religion.

Then we did an activity to find our Torah portions. Our parents and the Cantor helped to unroll the whole Torah, and then we were called up so that we could see our Torah portion and how it interacted with everyone else's as part of a much larger story than the part we will be learning. It was very cool to see everyone find their part and we thought it was great when we could see the whole Torah.

October 9th 2016

We started the day in the sanctuary learning with Cantor Rick. When we were done we went back to the classrooms and played memory games and colored.

 

 

In our Parent Child Hebrew class today, we heard a special presentation about Yom Kippur, and had a special snack.

 

 Then we continued learning about different prayers with our families!

 

In our 4th grade class, we are talking about the curriculum for this year's Judaic studies , and what are some things that are too big for us to finish, but we can try to help and leave a big impact on someone else's life, and encourage more people to help like hunger and poverty through the world. We connect this to our Hebrew studies where we will be talking about acts of love and kindness, such as including people that look lonely on the playground or smiling to people who look sad.

 

 

In the beginning of Hebrew, we discuss Roshashana and Yom Kippur ( they are spelled wrong) what we do during these holidays. what they mean, what we do, and why we are celebrating. Then we have some students and Mr. Stone attempt to use the shofar the way we do in services.

 

 

 

 We use the shofar to give the congregation a wake up call to say we know we haven't been the best this year, but we should get rid of all the negativity from this last year and make this next year positive.
