Grade 3
Due to technical difficulties, there is no blog post for Grade 3 today.
Grade 4
To begin the day, Grade 4 went to T’filah. During this time, we learned that this week’s Torah portion is called Terumah. After hearing of the background of this Torah portion, we knew that Israelites used to worship in Mishkan to help them connect to G-d. We talked about how many people we thought were needed to build a Mishkan, then we discussed how important details are in life as well as in Mishkan.
Then, in Kehillah, we sang HaTikvah and the sixth graders led us in Havdallah. We also sang Yom Huledet Sameach (Happy Birthday) to everyone with February birthdays.
In class, we split up into two groups. One group worked with our madrich, Zach. This group helped to finish up our Purim Carnival poster. We're excited to be able to run our own booth at the carnival!!
Another group worked with Mrs. Zaas, learning about Kibbud Av v'Em (Honoring our Parents). We read a story together and talked about how the people in the story did a good job, or not so good job of following the mitzvah of honoring our parents.
Then, the groups switched!
In Hebrew, we started working on Ahavat Rabah, which talks about how God loves us and we love God. We used highlighters to find different roots within the prayer that will help us recognize words that we know. It was a great way to help us become more familiar with the prayer!
Grade 5
To
begin the day, Grade 5 went to T’filah. During this time, we learned that this
week’s Torah portion is called Terumah. After hearing of the background of this
Torah portion, we knew that Israelites used to worship in Mishkan to help them
connect to G-d. We talked about how many people we thought were needed to build
a Mishkan, then we discussed how important details are in life as well as in
Mishkan. Afterward, we went to Kehillah. We had Havdallah, we sang to the
February birthdays, then we had our snack of animal crackers and water. Next we
had art! During art we talked about the prophets we’ve learned about, and we
discussed what choices they had to make and how they changed. Then, we applied
this to our own lives and began our art project. We traced our hands- one hand
represented our past choices and the other represented our future choices. We
had to think long and hard about what we’ve done and what we want to do in our
lives, whether it’s going to college or moving to Paris, France.
Back
in class, we did a partner read of the Amidah. We then chanted our assigned
parts of the prayer. Finally, once we were sure we were perfect at them, we
went in front of the class and taught our fellow students how to chant the entirety
of the prayer.
To
end the day on a fun note, we played Hebrew jeopardy. All of the major topics
that we’ve learned were on the quiz, and with the help of our teammates, we
were able to recall all of the wonderful information we’ve retained thus far.
Grade 6
To begin the day, Grade 5 went to T’filah. Afterward, we went to Kehillah. We had Havdallah, we sang to the February birthdays, then we had our snack of animal crackers and water.
We had a special guest educator today! Rebecca Shankman, a madrichah in
Grade 4 and in Parent-Child Hebrew, told us about her incredible trip to
Israel as a part of icenext. icnext is "a unique two-year program that
educates a dedicated group of Jewish high school sophomores and juniors from
all denominations in the core issues of Israeli society and the geopolitical
situation in Israel today. In addition, students learn, engage and work with a
group of Israeli peers from Beit She’an/Emek HaMayanot, Cleveland’s partnership
region. The first year culminates in a 10-Day Israel exploratory mission,
giving participants the opportunity to experience the realities of life in
Israel. In the second year, students will be involved in initiating,
organizing and galvanizing peer involvement in educational, political or
cultural activities designed to build support for the State of Israel. Students
will become expert Israel engagers in order to educate others about
Israel" (http://www.icnext.org/what-is-icnext/).
Rebecca's icnext cohort put together an exhibit called ‘Blue, Brown and More.’ We talk about that
although Israel is partially a desert; her trip was mainly based around water.
Rebecca and her group went to very interesting places including farms, where
they grow fruits and vegetables using new water technology, purifying the water
from the dead sea, to make it fresh and drinkable. They also took a trip on a
research boat through the Mediterranean Sea that analyzes bacteria and
organisms, where they make sure the water is clean.
Today
in Hebrew, we talk about the Kiddushah being holy, but we didn’t really know
what holy meant so we came up with a list of what it means including respecting
people and the earth, and how we practice it
like rising on our toes to be
closer to God.
We also spent time learning more about Havdallah and Mrs. Gabay brought in her ukulele so we could practice Havdallah as a class, which will help us next month when we lead it again for the rest of the school! We also made our own spice sacks with many different kinds of
spices.
